Vevay High School Graduating Class 1869

The Closing Exercises of “A Class” of Vevay High School, at the Court House last Friday night, was witnessed by a large, orderly and appreciative audience. The essays and declamations produced were good, and an honor to the School. The following persons compose the Graduating Class:

Vevay Town Council – 14 May 1868

Proceedings of Town Council.

The Town Council met at the Court House last Friday evening, for the purpose of transacting Corporation business.

The Trustees elected for the ensuing year were qualified and took their seats.

Isaac Stevens was reelected President of the Council.

The following bills were allowed:

  • Hinson Bright, for removing dead hogs, $3.50.
  • David Fursel, work on streets, $1.50.
  • Wm. Smith, superintending Cemetery, $42.12.
  • Wm. Goldenburg, services as Treasurer, $25.00.
  • F. A. Boerner & Bro., keeping town clock in order, $15.00.
  • J. K. Pleasants & Co., lumber, $15.51.
  • W. J. Baird, printing, $16.00.
  • G. P. Tinker, services as Clerk, $11.50.
  • Stevens & Son, stationary, $1.40.
  • J. W. Gray, judge election, $2.50.
  • J. Armstrong, judge election, $2.50.
  • Isaac Stevens, judge election, $2.50.
  • A. Rous, judge election, $2.50.
  • Robert Smiley, gravel on Washington street, $79.95.

Monday Evening, May 11.

The Clerk, Treasurer, Marshal and Assessor, having filed their bonds, were qualified and took charge of their respective offices.

The following committees were appointed:

  • On Claims—Messrs. Hall, Gill and Teats.
  • On Wharfs—Messrs. Gill, Teats and Phinip.
  • On Streets and Alleys—Messrs. Gilbert, Phinip and Boerner
  • On Cemetery—Messrs. Gilbert, Hall and Phinip.

Wm. Smith was appointed Superintendent of the Cemetery.

Proceedings of the Town Council

The Town Council met at the Court House last Monday night. The Clerk has kindly furnished us with the following synopsis of its proceedings:

The following bills were allowed:

  • H. A. Downey, $15.00, for legal services in having certain streets and alleys opened, and drafting ordinance, and other services.
  • Andrew J. Elder, $36.65, for graveling side walks leading to the Public School House.
  • Will M. Smith, $2.75, for drafting contract with Owen & Davies.
  • James Kincaid, $27.00, for rock and work on Washington Street culvert.
  • Alfred Stow, $30.00, for services as Marshal, for the months of February and March.
  • Armstrong & Fugitt, $7.00, for repairing ring bolts at Washington Street grade.
  • Messrs. Ormsby & McCrellis $15.00, for legal services rendered by drafting an ordinance for the marking and impounding of hougs.
  • David Forsall, $1.00, for hauling off two dead hogs, per order of Marshal.
  • George H. Kyle, $20.00, for drafting plat of Vevay Cemetery.

Henson Bright presented a bill of $3.50 for hauling off seven dead hogs, at different times, which on motion, was referred to committee on claims.

On motion an order to have certain streets and alleys opened, was indefinitely postponed.

On motion the Marshal is directed to enforce the ordinance of feeding and hitching teams in the streets.

On motion, the Trustees were allowed an order on the Treasurer for $24.00 each, for services during the present year.

The Clerk was directed to order an election of Corporation Officers for the ensuing year.

Vevay Town Council – 5 Dec 1867

Proceedings of Town Council.

At the meeting of the Town Council last Monday night the following bills were allowed:

  • Ormsby & McCrellis, $5
  • Wm. Smith, $8.33
  • Francis Bonner, $10.50

Mr. Bonner was employed to take care of the cannon, for the sum of 75 cents per month.

John J. Roberts was granted a license to sell liquor in a less quantity than a quart at a time, to be drank on the premises.

The Committee on repairing Washington Street Grade; were allowed another month, with orders to put such repairs on said street as they deemed necessary.

A committee was appointed to examine the contract between the Town Trustees and the renters of the Washington Street Grade; to report at the next meeting.

John Armstrong and G. W. Hawthorn were appointed a committee on sidewalks leading to the school house.

Vevay Town Council – Nov 1867

Proceedings of Town Council.

The Trustees of this place met at the Court House last Monday night, for the transaction of Town business.

The following bills were allowed:

  • Alfred Stow, $124, for services as Health Officer, Street Commissioner and Marshal for the months of May, June, July, August, September and October
  • A. J. Elder, $343, for stone spread at the foot of Ferry Street
  • A. P. Dufour, $3, for surveying and establishing corners in Vevay Cemetery
  • Armstrong & Fuget, $8, for chain furnished grade at the foot of Ferry Street
  • F. A. Boerner & Bro., $15, for keeping Town Clock in order
  • Josiah Jackman, $7, for measuring 548 perch of stone on the foot of Ferry Street
  • David Forsell, 50 cts., for burying dead hog
  • Wm. Smith, $3.50, for Superintending Cemetery

J. W. Gray and G. W. Hawthorn were appointed a committee to have a gutter repaired at the foot of Ferry Street.

G. W. Teats, John Armstrong, and G. W. Hawthorn, were appointed a committee to examine the grade at the foot of Washington Street.

President I. Stevens stated to the Board, that having information that James Torrance had been selling gravel out of Arch Street, and deeming it necessary, had employed Col. Carter to institute suit against said Torrance. The Board concurred in the action of President Stevens in the above case.

John Armstrong was appointed a committee to procure the Marshal a suitable badge.

From a report made to the Council, by Wm. Smith, Superintendent of Vevay Cemetery, we learn that the following number of internments were made in the Cemetery during the quarter ending Nov. 1, 1867:

  • August – 5
  • September – 3
  • October – 3
  • Total – 11

The ages of those interred ranged as follows: From sixty to seventy, 1; from fifty to sixty, 1; from forty to fifty, 1; from twenty to thirty, 1; one month to six months, 4; premature, 3. Eight of the deceased were males and three were females.

The following were the causes of their deaths: Drowned, 1; Consumption, 3; Whooping Cough, 2; Heart Disease, 1; Unknown, 4.

In 1866 the number of deaths during the same months was 16.
