This is an index of Rising Sun Sexton’s Records from 1858 to 1940. Many of the entries are for gravestones that no longer exist or graves that were never marked. The records were viewed on FHL microfilm 1311820, item 1. They are mislabeled on the microfilm as Ohio County Death Records, 1858-1940.
The sexton’s records contain burials in
- Rising Sun Old Cemetery (now called Union Cemetery) established in 1814 by John James. It is on the south end of Downey Street behind the school. Includes:
- Scranton’s Addition
- JamesJones’ Addition
- Gilmore’s Addition
- Cedar Hedge Cemetery established in 1863 by John J. Jones. It is across from Union Cemetery at the south end of Downey Street.
- Potter’s Field parts of these cemeteries
Burials in German Cemetery from 1873 to 1920 are in a separate index. These records do not contain burials in Rising Sun New Cemetery, established in 1913, except for burials in the German Cemetery.
The original records contain the following headings: entry number, name, date of birth, age, disease or cause of death, and remarks (containing cemetery name, sex, color and marital status).
Entries in the original book start on page 3 with number 776. It is unknown where earlier entries were kept or if they still survive today.
Digital images of these records are available through the Record Requests Page. The index is also available for purchase in paperback and PDF ebook.
