Dearborn County Teachers’ Institute – 1877

Report on the 1877 Dearborn County, Indiana Teachers’ Institute appeared in:
Lawrenceburg Register – 30 Aug 1877 – Page 3, Column 4

Dearborn County Teachers’ Institute.

This Institute met in this city, on Monday last, at 9 o’clock a.m., with seventy teachers in attendance, the largest attendance ever had at the opening of an Institute in this county. On Wednesday morning the number had reached ninety-two, every available seat in the high school room of our public school building being occupied, and the teachers, and all in attendance, seemed highly interested in the proceedings. The Institute is under the charge of Prof. H. B. Hill, our County Superintendent, acting as President, and Mr. T. W. Hillman, of Wilmington, as Secretary. Mr. Hill is managing the exercises of the Institute with much skill and good judgment, and we doubt not, it will be of much practical good to those who avail themselves of its advantages.

The instructors for the session, which will last through this week, are as follows: Arithmetic, Grammar and Geography, Prof. F. H. Tufts, Superintendent of the Aurora public schools; Additional Grammar, Mr. A. Gridley; Physiology, Prof. W. H. Isley; Theory and Practice and Primary Work, Prof. C. W. Bennett, of Piqua, Ohio. We must say, without making any invidious distinction, that we have not much need of going out of the county to secure a competent and efficient instructor for our Institute, as long as Prof. Tufts is in this vicinity. His clear and concise manner of elucidation, and imparting what he knowns, makes him an eminently qualified instructor for the Institute.

Through the courtesy of Mr. Hillman, the gentlemanly Secretary, we are enabled to give the entire roll of those in attendance:
