Switzerland County Commissioners – Mar 1885

Switzerland County, Indiana, Commissioners’ proceedings appeared in:

County Business.

Among other business transacted at the March session of the County Commissioners was the following:

Township Trustees made their reports and settled.

W. J. Keeney and Joel D. Davis, viewers in case of Thomas Gibbens and others for change of highway, reported the change would be of public utility—and that John Q. Cochran will be damaged $15, Hannah Abdon $10, Sanford Wilson $27.

Robert D. Lee and others petitioned for a change of highway, in York Township. The Board found the petition defective, and it was withdrawn.

Joseph G. Thamann was granted license to retail liquors in Vevay.

In compliance with a request from O. A. Potter, Trustee of Cotton Township, the boundary lines of voting precincts in that Township were changed. [See newspaper for details.]

William C. Robinson, County Treasurer, presented County orders redeemed for quarter ending Feb. 28, 1885, amounting to four thousand nine hundred and seventy four dollars and thirty seven cents. Examined, compared with Auditor’s record, found correct and cancelled.

Aaron Miller, Ebenezer Phillips, and Charles Markland, Directors of the Log Lick and East Enterprise Turnpike Road Company—surrendered said road to the County. Accepted as a public highway.

It was ordered that James P. Orem, County Recorder, be employed to revise the list of mortgages held by taxpayers in the County, and furnish copies of lists to the Township Assessors—for which he is to be paid $10.

The use of Court House was granted for Vevay Temperance Society, under proper restrictions.

It was ordered that in addition to the requirements of the Statute in regard to the loaning of school funds; persons who hereafter make application for school loans, must procure an abstract of title showing a perfect description of the lands proposed to be mortgaged to secure said loan.

Ordered, that James B. McCrellis be and is hereby employed to act as County Attorney, to advise the Auditor in regard to titles of school mortgages, and give the Commissioners such counsel as may be necessary in conducting the County business. Compensation at the rate of $100 per year, payable quarterly.

It was ordered by the Board that the Treasurer be authorized to publish the names and amount of taxes against delinquents who have no real estate.

VEVAY.
The capital of Switzerland county, on the Ohio river. It is surrounded by a rich and wealthy agricultural country, which affords a good support to the place. Large quantities of grain and hay are shipped from here annually. The town is laid out with much taste, and contains several good buildings and business houses, with several fine churches, several manufacturing establishments, one weekly newspaper, which is ably conducted for the welfare and interests of the place. It now has a population of about 1800.
