Lawrenceburg – 1866 Indiana Gazetteer and Shippers’ Guide

Lawrenceburg, Dearborn County, Indiana entries from:
Cowen, M.V. B., compiler. The Indiana State Gazetteer and Shippers’ Guide for 1866-7. Lafayette, Indiana : Rosser, Spring & Cowen, 1866.
Digital Copy at HathiTrust

Lawrenceburg, capital of Dearborn county, on the Ohio river, and on the Indianapolis & Cincinnati and Ohio & Mississippi railroads, 21 miles from Cincinnati, and  90 miles from Indianapolis. This is one of the oldest towns in the State, being contemporary with Cincinnati. It is surrounded by as fine a body of land for agricultural purposes as can be found in the West, but being subject to inundation from the river, it has made very little progress in years past. However, something is now being done to advance its commercial interest and increase its population. The City Council has secured two valuable levees, almost obviating the water difficulties. Several new and extensive manufacturing enterprises are already in progress, one of these is the large furniture manufactory; another a bedstead manufactory; and a woolen mill has been erected by a joint stock company, representing a capital of $100,000, under the style of the Lawrenceburg Woolen Manufacturing Company. Trade is brisk, and all kind of legitimate enterprises prospering. Population 4,500. Express Company, Adams.

Switzerland County – 1861 Ohio River Gazetteer

Switzerland County, Indiana entries from:
G.W. Hawes’ Commercial Gazetteer and Business Directory of the Ohio River 1861. Indianapolis : G. W. Hawes, 1861.
Digital Copy at Google Books

PATRIOT, IND.,
Two miles below [Hamilton, Ky.], a post village of Switzerland county, in Posey township, situated 20 miles above Vevay, 100 miles above Louisville, 50 miles below Cincinnati, and about 100 miles south-east from Indianapolis. It was laid out in 1830, and is situated three miles from Big Bone Springs. It contains a Methodist, Presbyterian and Universalist church, a collegiate institute, Masonic and Odd Fellows’ lodges, 10 stores of various kinds, 2 hotels, 1 steam flouring mill, 1 steam saw mill, and a variety of mechanical and manufacturing branches. Population 600. Township, 2,000.

NEW YORK,
Sometimes called Florence, one mile below [Warsaw, Ky.], in Switzerland county, Ind., is a small village. Population about 200.

VEVAY, IND.,
Ten miles below [New York, Ind.], the county seat of Switzerland county, situated on the Ohio river, equi-distant between Cincinnati, O. and Louisville, Ky. It was laid out in the year 1813 by John Francis Denfour and Daniel Denfour, emigrants from Canton De Vend, in Switzerland, Europe, and in remembrance of their native town gave it its present name. The town is laid out on part of the land which was entered by John James Dufour and his associated, in the beginning of the present century, and on which an extended credit was given, by an act of Congress, with a view of encouraging the culture of the grape. The commerce of the town is confined chiefly to the shipping of produce to the southern markets, and is the point on the Ohio river to which most of the produce of the county is brought for shipment. It is remarkable that, as yet, there has never a case of cholera originated in the town. Many attribute that fact to the water used by the inhabitants—it being altogether cistern water that is used. It is a very healthy location. There are at present a Methodist, Baptist and New School Presbyterian church. The Catholics have a small church started recently, which begins to increase in number. As yet they have no public worship, having rented for the time being a house for a chapel, but contemplate building a fine church. The Reformers have a congregation but not house of worship yet built.

Much attention is given to the culture of the grape. The variety found to succeed best here is the Cape grape, from which a considerable quantity of wine, resembling claret, is made. Population about 2,000.

Dearborn County – 1861 Ohio River Gazetteer

Dearborn County, Indiana entries from:
G.W. Hawes’ Commercial Gazetteer and Business Directory of the Ohio River 1861. Indianapolis : G. W. Hawes, 1861.

LAWRENCEBURG, IND.,
Two miles below the mouth of the Great Miami, an important post town, and the capital of Dearborn county, is pleasantly situated on the right bank of the river and on the Ohio and Mississippi railway, at the intersection of the Indianapolis and Cincinnati road, 90 miles south-east from Indianapolis and 22 miles west by south from Cincinnati.

The rich alluvial bottom lands in the vicinity are remarkable for their great fertility of soil; and the surrounding country is distinguished for the beauty of its scenery. Lawrenceburg was laid out in 1801, and is admirably situated for the successful prosecution of manufacturing operations. Of its trade and manufactures the Indianapolis Daily Journal of March 20th, 1860, says:

“Lawrenceburg enjoys a good local trade, and in the manufacture of flour and whisky there are few towns in the State that show as large figures as the county seat of Dearborn can exhibit.

“On the hills north of Lawrenceburg the vine is cultivated to a considerable extent. The soil is rich, porous, and warm; and on the south side of the elevations, the grape grows to great perfection. The upper crust of the earth is full of limestone rock, which is used to make mole-hill walls below the vine roots, to prevent the rains washing the earth from around them. This is the plan adopted by vine growers on the hills adjoining the valleys of the Rhine and Neckar, in Germany.

“The commissioners of Dearborn county are erecting a new jail, using a portion of the materials in their old prison for the purpose. It is to be of stone, and substantially built. The cells will be formed after May’s patent, which prevents the escape of prisoners under any circumstances when once locked up.”

Besides the public buildings of the county, Lawrenceburg contains 6 or 7 churches, several flourishing schools, 1 large steam flouring mill, 1 water flouring mill, 3 large distilleries, 2 breweries, several hotels, a branch of the bank of the State, 2 newspapers, and numerous and varied mercantile and mechanical branches. Population about 5,000.

AURORA, IND.,
A post city of Dearborn county, situated at the mouth of Hogan creek, 26 miles below Cincinnati, and on the Ohio and Mississippi railway, four miles from Lawrenceburg, the capital of the county, and 90 miles south-east from Indianapolis.

It was laid out in 1819, incorporated in 1848, and is surrounded by a rich farming region. It is a place of considerable business, exports large quantities of produce, and contains 1 Catholic and 5 Protestant churches, several flourishing schools, 1 weekly newspaper, various benevolent institutions, numerous mercantile and manufacturing establishments, including distilleries, planing mills, sash and blind factories—also cooper shops, slaughter houses, pork-packing establishments, &c. It was laid out in the year 1818 by Benjamin Drake, under the name of New York, which name it retained until about the year 1845, when it was changed to that of Florence. It was a healthy location, and is surrounded by a very fertile section of country, inhabited by moral, industrious, intelligent, and enterprising farmers, whose stalworth frames and sinewy hands burden the capacious warehouses of the town with the products of their farms.

The place has four stores, a school house and church, and there is a saw and flouring mill and distillery now being erected, is a point of very considerable commercial importance for the size of it, especially is it noted for buying and shipping of produce to distant markets. In the single article of wheat alone there is about thirty-five thousand bushels shipped annually to Cincinnati and other points, which, however, will now be manufactured into flour principally at home. Apple, potatoes, hay, pork, and other articles are shipped in proportion. The population is about 500.

VEVAY,
The county seat of Switzerland county, situated on the Ohio River, equidistant between Cincinnati and Louisville, Ky. It was laid out in the year 1813, by John Francis Denfour and Daniel Denfour, emigrants from the Canton De Vend, in Switzerland, Eorope, and in remembrance of their native town gave it its present name. The town is laid out on part of the land which was entered by John James Denfour and his associates, in the beginning of the present century, and on which an extended credit was given, by an act of Congress, with a view of encouraging the culture of the grape. The Catholics also have a small church started recently, which begins to increase in number. As yet they have no house of public worship, having rented for the time being a house for a chapel, but contemplate building a fine church. The Reformers have a congregation but no house of worship yet built. There is at present a very good school in the town under superintendence of the Rev. F. D. Bland. Population about 1,500.
