VEVAY. The judicial seat of Switzerland county, is an enterprising town of 2,100 inhabitants, located on the Ohio river, 100 miles southeast of Indianapolis and 75 below Cincinnati. Vevay presents a thrifty and prosperous appearance, and is supplied with 5 churches—Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian, Catholic and Christian—graded school, a bank, handsome private residences and a number of substantial business blocks. Three weekly newspapers, the Reveille, Times and Democrat, are published. RISING SUN. Is the county seat of Ohio county, located on the Ohio river, 38 miles below Cincinnati, and 92 southeast of Indianapolis. This is an incorporated town of 2,000 inhabitants, supplied with 6 churches, a graded school, 3 hotels, a national bank, and 2 weekly newspapers—Recorder and Local. The town carries a bonded debt of $6,000, and enjoys a good local trade from the surrounding fertile farming district. The industries of manufacture include 2 flour mills, saw mill, plow works and 1 tannery. Stage daily to Aurora; fare, 50 cents; and Patriot; fare, 50 cents. Exp., Adams and B. & O. John W. LAWRENCEBURGH. The county seat of Dearborn county, is a thrifty manufacturing city of 5,500 inhabitants located on the Ohio river, O. & M. and C. I., St. L. & C. Rys., 25 miles from Cincinnati and 89 from Indianapolis. Lawrenceburgh is a well-built city, supplied with gas works, 8 churches, 3 graded schools, 1 bank, 7 hotels and 2 weekly newspapers—Register and Press. This is a very important manufacturing center. Prominent among its mills, factories, etc., are 2 flour mills, 1 carriage factory, a planning mill, 4 large distilleries, 1 saw mill, 3 cooper shops, 3 furniture factories, a stove foundry, brewery, hub and spoke factory, 2 brick yards and coffin works. AURORA. This city of 6,000 inhabitants is situated on the Ohio river and O. & M. Ry., in Dearborn county, 4 miles below Lawrenceburgh court house, 25 from Cincinnati, and 90 from Indianapolis. It was settled in 1819, incorporated in 1848, and is now a growing manufacturing place supplied with 12 churches, 2 graded schools, an opera house with a seating capacity of 600, 2 national banks, 4 hotels, gas works and a fire department. The press is represented by 2 weekly newspapers, the Independent and Spectator. The chief manufacturing establishments comprise 1 flour mill, furniture factory, distillery, 1 foundry, 2 chair factories, saw mill, nail works, machine shop, large brewery, cooper shop and 3 brick yards.
