Center Township, Dearborn County Civil War Draft – Sep 1864

The Civil War draft list for Center Township, Dearborn County, Indiana appeared in:
Aurora Commercial – 22 Sep 1864 – Page 3, Column 1

THE DRAFT.—“A large and very enthusiastic” crowd gathered at Council Hall last Tuesday evening to learn the names of those who had been gathered to Abraham’s bosom. Col. Platter having returned from Greensburg with the list of those drawn in Centre Township, read it to the audience, who, we may say, listened with marked attention, occasionally indulging in shouts of hilarity or derision, when the names of persons noted for any peculiarity were mentioned.

The $40 and $100 exemption clubs were remarkably fortunate, no more members being drawn from them than they are able to find substitutes for without any assessment upon subscriptions. In the $40 club, with 55 members, there are 11 drafted—4 only of whom are inside of 100. In the  $100 club, with 53 members, there are 10 drafted, 6 of whom are inside of 100.

We publish below the list of men drafted in Centre Township in the order in which they were drawn. The quota of the township is 69. When that number of able bodied men is made out of the 138 drafted, the balance will be released. There are probably some errors in the list, as no opportunity was had to copy the names from the rolls. They were taken down as they were announced.—We have not yet received any list of the men drafted from other townships.
