Switzerland County Commissioners – Sep 1882

The Switzerland County Commissioners’ proceedings appeared in:

County Business.

Among other business transacted by the County Commissioners last week was the following:

Scott Mead and Selar Douglas, of Posey Township, was appointed students to Purdue University from this county.

Supply Walker and others, petition for the vacation of Patriot and Barkworks Turnpike road. There being no objection, the petition was granted and the proper Township Trustees ordered to take charge of the road.

In the matter of Geo. W. Sanders and others, for relocation and change of road—Wm. Mellick, U. H. Stow, and S. B. Hyde, viewers, presented a report making the change asked for. The report was approved and the road ordered located as the viewers recommended.

The Wrought Iron Bridge Co., Canton, Ohio, being the lowest bidder,  was awarded the contract for building iron bridge over Log Lick Creek at $41 per lineal foot. Length of bridge 200 feet, and it will cost $8,200. To be completed on or before Nov. 15th.

Martin G. Keeney was appointed superintendent of the construction of Hog Run culvert.

Wm. C. Robinson, County Treasurer, presented orders redeemed by him for the quarter ending Aug. 31st, amounting to $8,026.52, which were examined, compared with the Auditor’s Register of Orders, found correct, and ordered cancelled.

M. G. Keeney, superintendent of repairs and erection of the bridge at Beaty’s Ford, filed his report, showing an expenditure of $346.36 for materials and labor to date. Work not yet completed.

The boundary lines of voting precincts in Jefferson Township were ordered changed. For particulars see notice in another column.

John N. Searcy, formerly Trustee of Posey Township, presented a report claiming that he never received credit in any settlement for [see newspaper].

The Auditor was ordered to sell the stable on the public square.

John Gill was employed to superintend erection of abutments for Log Lick bridge.

M. G. Keeney was employed to get Markland bridge out of the creek and place it on the bank.

Americus Benedict, Ex-Treasurer, who retired from office in Sept., 1881, presented to the Board a statement, claiming that there were errors in settlement of taxes collected by him on the duplicates of 1878, 1879, and 1880, amounting to $442.38, which sum he asked to be allowed on the final settlement between him and the County. The Commissioners appointed Adolph Hilderbrand to examine said settlement and also to ascertain the entire sum due to the county from said Benedict.  He to report at a special meeting to be held soon.

J. H. Netherland was allowed $103 for erroneous taxes from 1876 to 1881.

Switzerland County Commissioners – Jun 1882

County Business.

The County Commissioners (Dillard R. Drake, Julius Muret, and Silas Howe) had an unusually large amount of business before them.

W. C. Robinson presented county orders redeemed for quarter ending May 31st, amounting to $23,313.41. Found correct and cancelled.

Geo. W. Sanders and others petitioned for change and relocation of road in Cotton Township. U. H. Stow, Wm. Mellick, and Samuel Hyde, were appointed viewers.

The Auditor presented his annual report, which was approved.

Several licenses to retail liquors were granted.

F. R. Cunningham and others petitioned for the vacation of a road in Pleasant Township. There being no remonstrance the road was ordered vacated.

Physicians for the poor were employed:

  • Pleasant Township—Dr. P. C. Holland
  • York—Dr. J. M. Langsdale for Florence Precinct, and Dr. George W. Hewitt for Markland Precinct.
  • Posey—Dr. E. M. Cheever
  • Cotton—Dr. R. G. Simpson
  • Jefferson and Craig, including poor house and jail—Drs. Griffith & Ormsby.

Perret Dufour was appointed inspector of Precinct No. 1, (vice F. L. Grisard, who refused to serve).

Taxes for 1882 were levied.

A. M. Golay and others petitioned for a fill and culvert at Hog Run; and J. M. Burns having raised about $400 from individuals to assist in paying for the same, it was ordered that the petition be granted. M. G. Keeney will make the plans and specifications.

The County Auditor made a statement showing the amount of School funds, which was approved.

Switzerland County Commissioners – Mar 1882

County Business.

The County Commissioners met last week. The following is a summary of the business transacted:

Dempsey Gullion presented a petition for Eastman Ford, B. Stoops, and 15 other citizens of York Township, asking that Milton Gullion, Dempsey Gullion and David R. Hust, be permitted to hang gates across roads until they could rebuild fences destroyed by water. Granted.

The Township Trustees presented reports, which were all found correct and approved.

Inspectors of Election were appointed as follows:

Jefferson Township.

  • Precinct No. 1, Court House, Alfred Shaw.
  • Precinct No. 2, LeClerc House, Frederick L. Grisard.
  • Precinct No. 3, Jacksonville, Morrison L. Brown.

York Township.

  • Florence precinct, Wm. C. Armstrong.
  • Markland precinct, Charles Markland.

Posey Township.

  • Patriot Precinct, Hosier J. Harris
  • Davis Corner Precinct, George Dibble.

Cotton Township.

  • Fairview Precinct, David B. Lee.
  • East Enterprise Precinct, Charles O. Potter.

Pleasant Township.

  • Bennington Precinct, Charles G. Adams.
  • Moorefield Precinct, Capt. Wm. Culbertson.

Craig Township.

  • Braytown Precinct, Township Trustee.

In the matter of Jonas C. Lee and others for change of road at Hog Run, E. Park, Wm. R. Protsman, and Geo. Wainscott, viewers, reported that the change asked for would be of public utility. The Commissioners approved the report of the viewers and ordered the road changed, as asked for by the petitioners.

The Commissioners being informed that Isaac F. Banta, Trustee of Craig Township, had removed from the township, declared the office vacant, and appointed James Cowan. (Since declined, and the office is still vacant.)

Wm. C. Robinson, County Treasurer, presented order redeemed by him for the quarter ending Feb. 28th, amounting to $21,692.65. Examined, compared with the stubs in the Auditor’s register of orders issued, found correct and cancelled.

Thomas J. Stewart presented the petition of Robert A. Harris and 50 other citizens of the County, praying that the Quercus Grove and North’s Landing Turnpike Road be declared abandoned by the Turnpike Company. The petition was granted and the road ordered to revert to the several road districts.

The bridge at the mouth of Turtle Creek, Florence, was ordered repaired.

It was ordered by the Commissioners that from and after the first day of April no shows, lectures, or other meetings be held in the Court House, except Courts and political meetings.

The Auditor was ordered to procure ballot boxes for voting precincts.
