Switzerland County Commissioners – Dec 1884

County Business.

Among the business transacted by the County Commissioners at their session last week, was the following:

In regard to the petition for a bridge over Murdock’s Run, near Patriot—M. G. Keeney, who was appointed by the Board at September term to examine and make estimates—recommended a bridge 72 feet clear span in three short spans. He estimated total cost of bridge, stone work and embankments, at $1045.10. No further action was taken by the Board then to have report filed.

In the matter of a petition for a bridge over Grant’s Creek, where the North’s Landing and Quercus Grove’s road crosses said Creek. M. G. Keeney appointed at September term, reported recommending a bridge 85 feet clear span. Estimated cost of bridge, stonework and embankment, $2,213.92. Report and estimates filed.

Eli Anderson, Wm. C. Lawrence and John D. Brindley, were granted licenses to retail liquors in Vevay.

Thomas Gibbons and others petitioned for a change of highway in Posey Township. Joel D. Davis, John J. Douglas and William J. Keeney were appointed viewers, to meet at the office of J. M. Long, Esq., December 17th.

Wm. H. Scott, Commissioner-elect from Second District, was qualified, (vice Luther C. Buck, term expired) and took his official seat Dec. 3d.

A petition was presented by citizens of York Township, asking the Board to offer a reward of not less than $300 for the arrest of Simon Peter Cooper, for the murder of Augustine Stewart. On account of the indebtedness of the County, the Board did not feel justified in making the appropriation.

The Board issued four County Bonds of five hundred dollars each, ($2,000 in all.) Wm. Hall, of the First National Bank, having agreed to purchase them at five per cent interest. They are payable at the pleasure of the County.

An order was passed by the Board for the guidance of the Sheriff in the care of the Court House, and defining his duties in the matter.

Julius C. Bersott was appointed a Constable for the District of Ira Banta, J. P., in Craig Township.

It was ordered by the Board, that in advertising the allowances made by the Board at each meeting, that the name of the Township Trustee making allowances to the poor, or recommending them, be published and the amount so allowed for each township be stated.

The Board as now constituted is comprised of William Brindley, 1st District; Wm. H. Scott, 2d District; Robert Scott, 3d District.

County Business.

Among other business transacted by the County Commissioners—Luther Buck, Robert Scott, and William Brindley—at their session last week, was the following:

William Rowin, Jacob H. Bruner, and Joshua H. Scranton, were licensed to retail liquor in Patriot.

“Ordered by the Board, that the order relating to holding meetings in the Court room, be and is construed by the Board to exclude all political club meetings.”

J. D. Davis, H. Myers, S. Lostutter, viewers appointed at the June term in the case of petition of Thomas Gibbons and others for change of highway—reported, that the proposed change was not of sufficient public utility, and that the public would not be benefited by said change. The report was accepted and approved.

The Auditor was ordered to advertise in the Vevay papers, that there are several boys and girls at the County Poor House for whom good homes are wanted.

Wm. C. Robinson, County Treasurer, presented to the Board of County orders redeemed by him during the quarter ending August 31, 1884, amounting to $13,013.36, which were compared with the Auditor’s Register of Warrants, found correct, and approved.

The Board issued four bonds of one thousand dollars each (nos. 38, 39, 40, 41,) in all four thousand dollars, maturing in five years, but payable at any time previous at the option of the County, and bearing five percent interest.

The Board of Equalization, composed of Perry K. Cotton, David Lee, Samuel E. Pleasants (appointed by Judge Allison), and the County Commissioners, met Monday, June 2d, and adjourned Tuesday, the 3d. The Assessor’s report were in good shape and approved. But few appeals were made to the Board, and they were satisfactorily adjusted.

John N. Searcy, ex Trustee of Posey Township, filed a claim for $160.50, for interest on $609.34, for April 1, 1878 up to date of rendition of judgment against him, Sept. 15, 1882, it being afterward ascertained that Searcy was entitled to a credit for said amount of $609.34. The Board decided that Searcy was entitled to a credit of $160.50 on his settlement with James W. Love, present Trustee of Posey Township.
