On Monday last C. G. Adams, as County Treasurer, surrendered the keys to Wm. Tait, his successor in office. Mr. Adams has been custodian of the county’s exchequer for two full terms—four years. The safe keeping of the funds belonging to State, school and county, makes this perhaps the most responsible office in the county. The confidence reposed in Charley Adams has not been misplaced. He has been faithful in his trust. His books and accounts, when compared with the Auditor’s records, balanced exactly—showing every cent received, and from what source, every cent received, and from what source ever cent expended, and on what account, and every cent not accounted for in expenditures was turned over to his successor—something over $25,000. No deficit there; no flies on Charley. It is admitted on all hands that Charley Adams has made an honest, efficient and obliging public officer, and we opine that all fair minded people in Switzerland County will give him the welcome plaudit, of “Well done, good and faithful servant,” while his host of friends will wish for him abundant success and prosperity in his future undertakings.

Sealed proposals for letting of Poor Asylum were opened by County Commissioners yesterday morning; the bids were as follows: Dudley Leap, $47 per year for each pauper; Enoch S. Adams, $8; Ebenezer Brandon, $68; James Curry Jr., $50. Mr. Adams being the present Superintendent, was awarded the contract.

The Board of County Commissioners have ordered that Nick Hirtz, on account of being crippled, be released from paying poll tax for present and former years.

County Commissioners have instructed Township Trustees hereafter not to pay to exceed $2 per month for house rent for paupers.

Additional Proceedings of County Commissioners.

In the case of Mary E. Snyder and others vs. Alda Wigal and others—petition for branch highway. Thomas Carver, John Hufford and Robert Sheldon appointed viewers. Afterwards reported and road opened.

Dr. W. A. Olcott, Treasurer Patriot School Board, presented his report, which was approved.

C. G. Adams, late County Treasurer, presented ordered redeemed by him for quarter ending August 31, 1889, amounting to $11,350.06. Found correct and approved.

S. R. Downey was employed to collect from State any amount due this county either on account of three percent fund, or unauthorized taxes paid by the county into the State Treasury or due to this county from the Sate on any account whatever. Compensation, 10 percent on amount actually collected.

Charles McVey, Trustee of Jefferson township, petitioned for permission to contract debt of $1,000 against the special fund for purpose of completing school house in District No. 5.

Adjourned Saturday.

The County Commissioners are traveling in the right direction. They reappointed Enoch S. Adams, Superintendent of County Poor Asylum, on the good record he has made, because he managed that institution efficiently and economically. They have ordered that hereafter Township Trustees must not agree to pay more than $2 per month for house rent for poor persons. We believe that this step will eventually result in the Commissioners finally ordering that the Township Trustees must not contract for house rent at all.  They have taken steps to see if the State owes the county any money. They ware also cooperating with the County Auditor in classifying and arranging the school funds, and putting them in good shape. All of these steps are of a business nature and in the interest of good and economical government, and as such are to be commended.
