MOORE’S HILL REVEILLE.

Among the large number present during Commencement week were Rev. D. T. Hedges and family, Manchester; Rev. E. A. Campbell, Aurora; Mr. and Mrs. Goddard, Greensburg; G. W. Johnson and wife, North Hogan; Dr. E. Tincher, Shelbyville; Dr. P. M. Bigney and family, Cincinnati; Dr. T. M. Kyle and family, Manchester; Lou Bromblay, Jeffersonville; Mary Weeks, North Vernon; Mrs. and Miss Jones, Decatur county; Revs. J. W. Mendell and Pelsor, Delaware; Rev. J. Y. O’Neal and family, Dillsboro; Revs. Joseph Cotton, Robertson, Sargent, Prof. R. W. Wood and family, Jeffersonville; G. W. Wood and family, Aurora; Capt. and Mrs. Hays, Lawrenceburg; G. S. COMMENCEMENT NOTES.

The crowd as usual was immense.

The societies did good work and deserve special mention.

A. J. Works, of East Enterprise, added on more to the vast throng on Commencement day.

The music, if anything, was an improvement on last year’s, with fine violin accompaniments thrown in for good measure.

E. E. Berry looks as well on the stage and behind the counter.

The annual sermon by Rev. E. A. Campbell was excellend, as was also the address by Rev. Chaffee.

“Tendencies and Opportunities,” by R. M. Barns, was a perfect literary treat and was greeted by full house.

J. H. Heinrichs, journalist, of Indianapolis, and a member of the class of ’80, accompanied by his wife, came down to size up the crowd and have a good time. He did both.

George W. Smith, in the oratorical contest, received the first prize, $25; Ed Lee the second, $15, and Mrs. Wimmer, the third, $10.

Mrs. D. E. Sparks, of Lawrenceburg, an Eastern college graduate and professional music teacher, is another who attended the exercises and highly complimented the same.

Switzerland County Commissioners – Jun 1886

Switzerland County, Indiana, Commissioners’ proceedings for June 1886 appeared in:

County Business.
Among other business transacted by the County Commissioners was the following:

John D. Myers, Markland; George Scott, Florence; Andrew Shafer, Patriot; Thomas Delaney, Vevay, were granted license to retail liquor.

M. C. Walden, County Superintendent, was granted use of Court House in which to hold County Institute.

Eugene W. Heath was appointed a Justice of the Peace to fill a vacancy occasioned by the resignation of Harvey Littlefield.

Charles G. Adams, County Treasurer, presented orders redeemed for quarter ending May 31st, amounting to $26,149.39—found correct and cancelled.

In the matter of petition of Thomas Dyer and others for a bridge over Indian Creek at Knox’s Ford. Deferred until September term.

James Curry, late Superintendent of Poor Farm, having learned that he was accused of taking away from the poor farm articles belonging to the county, appeared before the Board and demanded an investigation, which was granted, and the Board found Curry innocent.

It was ordered that the County Treasurer redeem $5,000 worth of county bonds.

The Board appointed the following persons as Inspectors of Elections for the ensuing year, for precincts other than the ones in which Trustees reside:

  • Jefferson Township—Court House (No. 1), Oliver S. Johnson; LeClerc House (No. 2), James S. Knox
  • York Township—Florence, Edward P. Goddard.
  • Posey Township—Davis’ Corner, Wm. Cunningham.
  • Cotton Township—Fairview, Charles W. Mendell.
  • Pleasant Township—Moorefield, C. Smith.
  • Craig Township—at John Cotton’s, Peter V. Ramseyer.

Decoration Day in Vevay.

At a meeting of the G. A. R. Post last night the following arrangements were made for observing Decoration Day, Monday, May 31st, (that time being specified by order of the Department of Indiana.)

Assemble at Post room Monday morning and start at 8 sharp for Mt. Sterling, and decorate the soldiers’ graves there. Returning reach Vevay about 11 o’clock.

1 P. M. Assemble at Post Headquarters and at 1:15 march to Court House Square; form possession and march to cemetery. Ceremonies and decoration of graves at cemetery. Return to Court House about 2 P. M. Ceremonies followed by address by Rev. H. Harris.

The meetings at Post Headquarters in the morning and afternoon will be public, and all soldiers are cordially invited to assemble with the members of the G. A. R. and march with the procession. Citizens of Vevay and vicinity generally are also invited to cooperate and join the possession.

The following committees have been selected, and the persons named below are requested to serve without further notice, with the full power to fill vacancies and add to their number if desired.
