Switzerland County Commissioners – Dec 1874

The Switzerland County Commissioners’ proceedings appeared in:

The County Commissioners
Met last Monday. Among other matters that came before them was the following:

The last Grand Jury reported that repairs were needed in the county jail, of which the Commissioners took due notice and have taken steps to carry out the recommendation of the jury.

Jacob S. Shaddy, the Assessor elect, filed his Bond, which was approved, and took his official oath.

James Tate and John S. Gurley were appointed Constables for Posey Township.

James Vaughn was appointed a Constable for York Township.

David Melick was appointed a Constable for Cotton Township.

Geo. H. Redd was appointed a Constable for Jefferson Township.

Nearly all of the Constables were appointed on account of the Constables elected in Oct., 1874, failing to qualify.

In the matter of the petition of James Rayl and others. Viewers reported favorable, and highway ordered to be vacated.

Petition was presented by Robt. Bovard, Wm. Sanders and others, for change of highway. Edward Abbott, John Stewart, and Royal Aldrich were appointed viewers.

Case of W. J. Keeney and others for highway in York Township, was before the Board and points of law argued by Mr. Livings for petitioners, and J. A. Works & Son for Charles Smead.—The report of Viewers was received and re-Veiwers were appointed to assess damages.

A Grand Jury for March and October terms, 1875, of the Circuit Court were drawn.

County Commissioners.

Among other business transacted at the recent session of the County Commissioners, was the following:

In the case of the petition of Wm. J. Keeney and others, for change of highway in York Township. Thomas Armstrong, David lee, and R. E. Hall, were appointed re-viewers. They will meet at the office of Lovell Edrington, Esq., in Florence, February 20, 1875.

The following persons were selected to act as Grand Jurors for the March Term of the Circuit Court:

  • York—Charles Markland and John Andrew
  • Posey—Charles Campbell and James T. Bodkin
  • Cotton—Wm. J. Brown and Andrew J. Houze

  • Craig—John Malcomson and Wm. J. Hollingsworth

Benjamin Picket was appointed a Constable for Cotton Township.

The question of grading Shull’s Hill was discussed, and it was decided to do so if it can be done at a satisfactory price. The Commissioners invite proposals for doing the work.
