Circuit Court adjourned on the 21st inst.

The last case tried was that of Mrs. Graham vs. Geo. A Hotchkiss. This was a suit brought for about one fourth of an acre of land in Pleasant Township. The Judge has not yet rendered a verdict.

A Special Term of the Common Pleas Court was to have been held last Tuesday; but for some reason Judge Berkshire postponed it until July 30th next.

Proceedings of the County Commissioners.

The County Commissioners closed their March session last Saturday night. Among other business transacted was the following:

In the matter of the petition of George W. Woodruff and others for vacation of highway. The viewers, S. B. Hyde, Silas R. Potter, J. J. McIntosh, reported  in favor of vacating said road.

In the matter of the petition of Wm. S. Twinham and others for vacation of highway. Thomas B. Dow, Jonathan McMakin, Solomon Waldon, viewers, reported that in their opinion said road was not of public utility. Benj. F. Rodgers, filed his objections to said report. The Commissioners sustained the objections of Rodgers, and laid aside the report of the viewers.

In the matter of the petition of John F. Cotton and others, for vacation of highway. John R. Morerod, Francis R. Dufour and Robert A. Knox were appointed viewers, to report at the next session, in June.

In the matter of the petition of Robert Scott and others, for location of highway. Dismissed.

The County Commissioners

Closed their June session last Tuesday. Among other business transacted was the following:

George Tardy, Perret Dufour, and others of Jefferson Township—Petition for vacation of Road in Jefferson Township. Robert A. Knox, John Gill and Amie Morerod, appointed viewers.

John B. Hastings and others; for change of highway in Jefferson Township—Road granted, and ordered to be made 30 feet wide.

Alfred Dunning, in Posey Township, for private road.—Jacob R. Harris, C. L. Moredock and Charles Dibble were appointed viewers.

Thomas P. North, J. W. Powell, and others, for vacation of highway in Posey Township.—Hiram Mead, Hiram Douglas and Indiana Humphrey were appointed viewers.

George W. Bromwell and others, for change of highway in York Township. Joseph Stewart, David Henry and Adam Lineback were appointed viewers.

A. R. Wells and others, for location of highway in Cotton Township. Not granted.

Jacob H. Bruner, of Patriot, was granted a license to retail liquors one year.

Thomas J. McKay, was appointed a Constable for Pleasant Township.

Hayden Hayes was appointed a Constable for Posey Township.

The town of Vevay was granted permission to use the cellar under one of the fire proof vaults of the Court House, as a prison.

Will M. Smith was appointed School Examiner for Switzerland County, Vice Prof. R. F. Brewington, who resigned on account of ill health.

During the past three months the Treasurer Redeemed orders to the amount of $48,626.17, of this amount $10,000.00 were County bonds.

Joshua D. Griffith, Treasurer elect, filed a bond of $75,000.00, which was approved by the Commissioners. He takes his office on the first of September next.

Wm. C. Froman, was appointed Constable for Jefferson Township—Vice R. F. McMakin, gone to Texas.

The levy for County Tax for 1871, was as follows, 60 cents on each $100.00 and 50 cents on each poll.

Switzerland County Circuit Court – Jun 1871

LAW REPORT.

Switzerland Circuit Court.

On Monday, May 29th, the Circuit Court convened at the Court House in this place, and Judge Berkshire being detained at Vernon in the trial of a murder case, and having forwarded an appointment to Judge Carter of the Common Pleas Court, he opened the Court, and presided during the day, Monday. Judge Berkshire appeared on Tuesday morning and took the bench, presiding ever since. Judge Emmerson of the 7th Judicial District came on Tuesday morning and opened a special term set for the trial of the Bradley murder case, and the Longworth-Fisher case. The latter is still pending before him.

The members of the bar of this county were all present. There were from abroad, Hon. Alex. C. Downey, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court; Judge C. E. Walker, H. W. Harrington, C. A. Korbly, and Walter Roberts of Madison; S. H. Stewart and S. R. Downey of Rising Sun.

The Docket for the term is made up of 32 criminal cases, and 112 civil cases, making in all 144 cases.

State vs. Orin Lemmons—Malicious Trespass. Plead guilty and fined $10.

During the present term, which commenced last Monday, the following cases have been disposed of:

State vs. Marion Todd—Riot. Plead guilty; fined $5 and costs.

State vs. John Gurley—Attachment. Fined $5.

State vs. Emerson Waldo—Selling Liquor to minors, 2 cases. Plead guilty, and fined $5 in each case.

State vs. George and Polly M. Waltz—Foreclosure of School Fund Mortgage. Judgment by default for $397.03.

State vs. Benj. L. Robinson—Foreclosure of School Fund Mortgage. Judgment by default for $393.56.

Jas. K. Pleasants & Co., vs. Alfred Aldrich—On note and account. Judgment by default for $150.40.

Switzerland County Commissioners Court – Mar 1871

The Switzerland County, Indiana, Commissioners’ proceedings appeared in:

Commissioners Court.

The Commissioners adjourned last Monday. Among other business transacted, was the following:

Mr. John S. Green was appointed a Constable for Posey Township.

In the matter of location of a road in Pleasant Township, by Wm. Dalgleish and others—viewers reported recommending that the road be opened. After receiving the report, the Commissioners ordered the road to be established 30 feet wide.

John Vanhouton, of Patriot, was granted a License to retail liquors.

J. B. Hastings and Ellenett Philips petitioned for a change of highway, in Jefferson Township. George Hastie, Aaron Miller and Jacob Bosaw were appointed viewers.

Thomas North, John W. Powell and others, petitioned for a change of highway in Posey Township. Continued until next term.

In the matter of George W. Bromwell and others for change of highway, in York Township. Eliaken Stoops, Wm. Huston and John Dowler were appointed viewers.

The following gentlemen were selected as Grand Jurymen, for the May Term of the Circuit Court:

  • Jefferson—Robert A. Knox and Charles Protsman.
  • York—Dempsey Gullion and John Mullen.
  • Posey—Thomas H. Sutton and Elza Abbott.

Switzerland County Commissioners’ Court – Dec 1870

The Switzerland County, Indiana, Commissioners’ proceedings appeared in:

The County Commissioners are in session. Among other business transacted was the following:

Rodolph McMakin was appointed a Constable of Jefferson Township.

John J. Roberts, Daniel Plew, and Thos. Delaney, of Vevay, Joshua M. Scranton, of Patriot, William J. Ayers and Abraham Gross, of Florence, were each granted License to retail intoxicating liquors.

In the matter of petition of Jordan Wainscott, P. Voris, and others, for change or highway. Road ordered to be established 30 feet wide.

Wm. Dangleish and others petitioned for change of highway.

Jas. Riley, Augustus Welch and Sylvester H. Morrison were appointed viewers, and will report at the next session of the Commissioners. A number of orders on the Treasury were allowed.
